Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially announced the release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, setting the stage for Sméagol’s tale to captivate audiences on December 17, 2027. This eagerly awaited premiere is now more than two years away and marks at least a one-year delay from the previously announced 2026 plan. Despite the wait, fantasy enthusiasts are already dreaming up ways to celebrate this cinematic event during the Christmas season of 2027.
Helming this project is Andy Serkis, renowned for directing films like Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Serkis is not only stepping behind the camera but will also reprise his iconic role as Gollum, a character he brought to life in both the original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as Caesar in the 2010 Planet of the Apes series. Fans can look forward to Serkis's deep understanding of Gollum’s psyche, enhanced by the expertise of returning Middle-earth veterans. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner are on board as producers, with Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou crafting the screenplay.
Peter Jackson has teased some story details, suggesting that The Hunt for Gollum will delve into the pasts of beloved characters. He emphasized a desire to explore narratives from Gollum’s life that were previously untold, drawing inspiration directly from J.R.R. Tolkien's works. “We really want to explore \[Gollum’s\] backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films,” Jackson stated. “It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from \[original author J.R.R. Tolkien\].”

As Warner Bros. expands its journey into the future of The Lord of the Rings films, The Hunt for Gollum is poised to introduce returning characters, with Gandalf being one name expected to appear. Philippa Boyens hinted to Empire last October that Gandalf might feature in potentially two live-action films. If plans proceed smoothly, fans could see the legendary wizard portrayed once again by the original actor, Ian McKellen.
With The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum now slated for release three Decembers from now, the anticipation builds. In the meantime, keep an eye on developments with Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which has been confirmed to return for Season 3 earlier this year.
