Jack Black Builds Mansion on Private Minecraft Movie Server

The newly released *A Minecraft Movie* is now in theaters, and it turns out the production team went above and beyond to capture the spirit of the game. In a move that highlights their dedication to authenticity, the filmmakers built a custom Minecraft private server accessible to the entire cast and crew throughout the production process.
Jack Black, who plays Steve in the film, was especially committed to the experience. Determined to prove he was a "real Minecrafter," he constructed an impressive mansion atop the tallest mountain in the server — complete with a basement art gallery. His enthusiasm for the game mirrored his passion for the role and helped bring genuine energy to the set.
Having constant access to a shared Minecraft environment proved invaluable during filming. Producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson explained to IGN how the server created a collaborative atmosphere reminiscent of working in a real indie game studio — where creativity flows freely and ideas are constantly exchanged. Although not every idea could be incorporated into the movie due to time constraints, the immersive experience allowed the team to add unique touches that enhanced the overall authenticity of the film.
Jack Black's Method Minecraft Approach
Director Jared Hess praised Jack Black’s immersive approach to the role, revealing that Black took his preparation seriously by playing Minecraft extensively on set. “Jack was super-weirdly method with the game,” Hess said. “He was harvesting lapis lazuli in his trailer, building structures, and coming back with fresh ideas. It was a dynamic process where everyone contributed in their own fun and creative way.”
Black himself confirmed that he treated the game as part of his acting preparation, joking about having an Xbox in his trailer and logging as much playtime as possible. He noted that the server was filled with props from various departments and that many members of the cast and crew were actively building elaborate creations. Wanting to stand out, Black challenged himself to build something unforgettable — a massive mansion high in the sky connected by a grand staircase.
“I had a basement in there with an art gallery and... I don’t even know if it’s still there!” Black laughed.
The Minecraft Server Lives On
According to Ólafsson, the server wasn’t shut down after filming ended. In fact, it remained active for over a year following production. When he revisited recently, he was surprised to find other users still logged in — including two former security guards from the set who were happily exploring the world they helped protect during filming.
Whether or not Jack Black’s mansion remains intact, the legacy of this special Minecraft server lives on. It stands as a testament to the creativity, teamwork, and playful spirit that defined the making of *A Minecraft Movie*.
