Exciting news for RPG fans—Suikoden is making a return with a twist! Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG set to launch for free on Android and iOS devices. While an exact release date remains under wraps, anticipation suggests a debut later this year.
For those unfamiliar, the Suikoden series, which debuted in 1995, is a beloved franchise developed and published by Konami and crafted by Yoshitaka Murayama. Inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, known as Suikoden in Japan, the series has captivated players with its rich narratives of political intrigue, the mystical True Runes, and the iconic 108 Stars of Destiny. Over the years, the series has expanded to include 11 titles, with the most recent release dating back to 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a full revival, fans are greeted with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile entry into this storied universe.
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while maintaining the series’ hallmark of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the beloved pixel art style, preserving the classic Suikoden aesthetic. Dive into the teaser trailer below to see it in action.
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that have sculpted the world's history. The protagonist, Hou, the son of the village chief, experiences a pivotal moment with his first successful hunt. However, tragedy soon strikes as his village is attacked, setting him on a transformative journey. Accompanied by Hisui, a servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, a childhood friend driven by justice; and Shapur, a former general now serving as a butler, Hou embarks on a quest to restore peace.
The announcement of Suikoden STAR LEAP as a gacha game has stirred mixed feelings among the Suikoden community. While fans have long awaited a proper continuation of the series, this mobile game marks a different approach by Konami. As we await its release, more insights will surely emerge. In the meantime, stay updated through the official website.
