Van Gogh's famous Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, reflects his deep emotional connection to the flower, symbolizing gratitude. He famously wrote, "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
He created four versions in August 1888, and revisited the motif in January 1889, producing further repetitions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original resides in London's National Gallery, one repetition in Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic—known for its vibrant colors—at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum. This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum (established in 1973) and LEGO, recreates this iconic third repetition (F458) as a three-dimensional relief, utilizing abstract pieces to mimic Van Gogh's distinctive brushstrokes.
The 2,615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags and an instruction booklet with a QR code linking to a podcast exploring Van Gogh's life and artistic inspirations. The build process is cleverly structured: you first construct the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly realistic touch that enhances the overall sense of accomplishment.
A delightful detail mirrors a historical quirk: Van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of the original canvas. LEGO cleverly replicates this with a separate strip affixed with pins, using brown bricks to mimic wood. This hidden detail adds a layer of authenticity and a unique builder's experience.
While building the sunflowers can be repetitive, it accurately reflects Van Gogh's meticulous approach. The wilting flowers and profile views, initially appearing abstract, create a cohesive whole when viewed from a distance. This detail highlights the artistic process and rewards patience.
The completed artwork's natural home is on a wall, a feature that sets it apart from other LEGO sets.
