NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has yet to comment on the use of character mods, including those featuring controversial figures.
Launched recently, Marvel Rivals has quickly gained millions of players. The game's hero-shooter format encourages strategic gameplay and unique character interactions. Players have been enhancing their experience with various mods, ranging from alternative skins based on Marvel Comics and films to even incorporating models from other games like Fortnite.
A Nexus Mods user created a mod replacing Captain America's model with Donald Trump, sparking online discussion and searches for a corresponding Joe Biden mod. However, both mods have since been removed from Nexus Mods, resulting in error messages when users attempt to access them.
Why the Removal?
Nexus Mods' 2020 policy explicitly prohibits mods related to US sociopolitical issues. This policy, implemented around the time of the 2020 presidential election, aims to maintain a neutral platform.
The mod's removal has generated mixed reactions on social media. While many found the ban unsurprising, given the perceived incongruity between Captain America and Trump's image, others expressed dissatisfaction with Nexus Mods' stance on political content. This isn't an isolated incident; while many Trump-related mods have been removed from Nexus Mods, others remain available for various games such as Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2.
Notably, NetEase Games has not addressed the broader issue of character mods in Marvel Rivals, focusing instead on addressing gameplay bugs and resolving player account issues. Given the game's recent release, prioritizing other aspects of game maintenance is understandable.
