NetEase Games is revamping its Marvel Rivals post-launch roadmap with a significant shift aimed at maintaining the live service momentum and keeping players engaged. The new strategy involves shortening the seasons and committing to introduce at least one new hero every month. This major update to the content release schedule was hinted at during the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video, which provided a glimpse into what fans can expect starting with Season 2.
Season 2, set to launch on April 11, will introduce a new Vanguard character, Emma Frost, at the outset. Mid-season, fans will be introduced to Ultron, though his class details will be unveiled closer to his release. Both characters are set to bring fresh abilities to the game, enhancing the gameplay experience. However, the most significant changes to how playable heroes will impact matches are slated to start from Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which is yet to have a confirmed release date, NetEase plans to reduce the season length from three months to two. This adjustment will allow for faster progression of major content updates while still fulfilling their promise of introducing at least one new hero every half-season. Consequently, the wait time between new hero releases will be significantly shortened after the launch of the hero following Ultron.
Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen, in the Dev Vision video, explained that since the launch of Season 1, the team has been focused on delivering a continuously engaging experience. Social media feedback has added pressure to maintain the game's excitement levels. Chen emphasized the goal of keeping the audience's enthusiasm as high as it was during the opening months, stating, "With our goal of keeping the audience’s excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning."
NetEase aims to fulfill players' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by exploring new modes and introducing a diverse roster of characters. Following extensive internal discussions and evaluations, the company will adjust its systems to accommodate the increased content flow. More details on how these changes will affect players will be shared before the launch of Season 3.
Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This transition promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with further details expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, attracting 10 million players within three days. The game was released on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam alone, the launch saw a peak of 480,990 concurrent players. Season 1 in January further boosted the game's popularity, reaching 644,269 concurrent players and securing its place as the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform.
Despite a recent decline in concurrent player numbers, Marvel Rivals remains highly popular and one of Steam's most-played games. The upcoming Season 2 and the planned changes for Season 3 are expected to reinvigorate the player base.
