New Mercenary Troops System in Age of Empires Mobile

Mar 27,2025 Author: Zoe

Ever dreamed of witnessing Joan of Arc commanding Roman Centurions into battle, or Hannibal Barca deploying Japanese Samurai to conquer Rome? With the latest update to Age of Empires Mobile, this fantasy becomes a reality thanks to the innovative Mercenary Troops system.

Starting at level 26, players can unlock the Mercenary Camp, a new structure that allows you to hire and recruit powerful units typically unavailable to your chosen faction. Not only can you contract these elite warriors, but you can also unlock and enhance technology to boost their combat prowess. To sweeten the deal, you can secure your first mercenaries for free through a new event that's currently live.

The Mercenary Troops roster is impressive, featuring units like Byzantine Cataphracts, Swiss Pikemen, Persian Immortals, Indian Battle Elephants, Roman Centurions, Egyptian Chariot Archers, Japanese Samurai, and Korean Archers. Each unit comes with upgradeable tech that amplifies their already formidable battlefield capabilities.

Age of Empires Mobile Mercenary Troops SystemThe introduction of the Mercenary Troops system evokes memories of Total War games, where I recall overwhelming foes with a horde of hired swords in Rome: Total War and Medieval II. However, this addition might polarize players; some may view it as disrupting the game's balance. Only time will tell how this feature will be received by the community. Will we see custom units like the historical Landsknechts added in the future? We'll have to wait and see.

If you're eager to dive in and need guidance on which heroes to unlock, our comprehensive guides for Age of Empires Mobile can help. Our tier list ranks all AoE Mobile heroes by power, helping you distinguish the strong from the weak.
