Meta Quest 3 Secures Exclusive for 'Civilization VII' VR Experience

Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the virtual reality (VR) world with its upcoming release on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S headsets this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into VR and mixed reality (MR) gaming, offering a unique and immersive strategic experience.

Meta Quest 3 Exclusivity and Developer Comments

2K Games and Firaxis Games announced the exciting news during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. The VR version will be exclusive to Meta's Quest 3 and 3S platforms. Dennis Shirk, Executive Franchise Producer, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, stating, "We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!" Chris Pruett, Meta's Director of Games, added, "With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." Note that, despite Civ VII's release on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.

Immersive Gameplay and Multiplayer Options

Civ VII VR places players at a virtual "Command Table," allowing for a unique perspective on the game world. Players can zoom in for detailed views of units and buildings or zoom out for a strategic overview, mimicking the feel of a physical board game. The game supports both immersive VR and MR modes, allowing seamless switching between the two. 2K Games describes the experience: "In virtual reality, players are transported to an ornate museum as they look out onto a vista personalized to their leader; in mixed reality, the Command Table adapts to its placement in a player's physical space."

The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer options for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or compete directly against each other. The VR/MR experience extends to multiplayer, allowing players to see each other as their chosen world leaders around the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires a 2K and Meta account.

Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates

Firaxis Games is actively addressing player feedback received during Civ VII's early access period (February 6, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance user experience and address concerns about map readability and information access. Future updates will include community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer and expanded map types. A quality-of-life update in March is planned, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balancing, diplomacy refinements, and bug fixes.
