Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in early 2025. Let's delve into the details of this exciting development.
A Spiritual Successor in the Works?
Notch, via a poll on X (formerly Twitter), revealed he's developing a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with tile-based first-person dungeon crawling (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he also expressed openness to creating a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft. The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired option, garnering 81.5% of nearly 290,000 votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity (45-50 million daily players), this isn't surprising.

In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He acknowledged the desire for a new Minecraft-like experience and expressed enthusiasm for returning to his passion project. He emphasized that while he's open to developing either game first, he's committed to creating one.
It's important to note that Notch sold Mojang (Minecraft's developer) and the IP to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, he can't directly utilize the Minecraft IP without Microsoft's involvement. He assured fans that any spiritual successor would avoid infringing on Mojang and Microsoft's work, expressing respect for their contributions.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating spiritual successors, acknowledging the potential for projects to deviate from initial expectations. He ultimately decided to pursue the option with significant fan demand and potential profitability.
While awaiting Notch's potential "Minecraft sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
