James Gunn's upcoming Superman film is set to introduce a fresh take on the iconic superhero, and it will also feature Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, specifically the character Guy Gardner. In a recent interview with TV Guide, Fillion shared that his portrayal of Gardner will stand out from previous iterations, describing his character as a "jerk." He emphasized that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, just fearlessness, and Guy Gardner embodies that trait, albeit with a less than admirable personality. Fillion finds this role liberating as an actor, allowing him to explore the most selfish and self-serving aspects of the character.
Fillion further highlighted Gardner's hubris, suggesting that his character's overconfidence might be his superpower, humorously noting that Gardner believes he could take on Superman, despite the obvious impossibility.
Superman marks the first film in the rebooted DC Cinematic Universe, spearheading the new chapter titled "Gods and Monsters." Alongside this cinematic venture, HBO is developing a series called Lanterns, which will explore other members of the Green Lantern Corps. The series, set to premiere in 2026, stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.
The cast of Superman includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Written and directed by James Gunn, the film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
