Nintendo App Reveals Live-Action Zelda Movie Date

Jan 06,2026 Author: Jonathan

Nintendo has confirmed that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will premiere on March 26, 2027.

The announcement was made through the newly launched Nintendo Today! app, which was introduced during Nintendo Direct in March 2025. No further movie details were shared at this time.

During the showcase, gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto surprised fans with this last-minute reveal. The all-in-one mobile app offers a range of features dedicated Nintendo enthusiasts won't want to miss.

As a hub for all things Nintendo, the app acts as a daily calendar and news source, delivering updates to players as soon as they’re released. Miyamoto explained that following next week’s Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans can sign into the Nintendo Today app for immediate information, with additional announcements arriving on a daily basis.

But the big news broke early: the Zelda movie release date is already drawing fans to download the app, hopeful for more game-changing reveals soon. Notably, Nintendo chose its news app over its own social media channels to share the Zelda movie news first.

Nintendo and Sony Pictures first unveiled plans for a live-action The Legend of Zelda film back in November 2023. Wes Ball—known for The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes—is directing, with Avi Arad and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto serving as producers.

Details about the movie itself remain scarce, however. Ball has described his vision as "live-action Miyazaki," referencing Hayao Miyazaki, the acclaimed creator behind Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. Ball also emphasized that the Zelda film will be a "serious" adaptation with a realistic feel, and noted that he intends to use minimal motion capture to maintain the grounded style of the movie.
