Skyblivion, the ambitious fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion using the Skyrim engine, is set to launch in 2025. This exciting project, driven by a dedicated team of volunteer developers, represents a monumental effort in the world of modding, akin to a AAA game in scope and ambition. The team recently reaffirmed their 2025 release target during a developer update stream, expressing optimism and a call for continued community support to help them meet, or even surpass, their goal. "We hope with your support to finish the final steps in completing our dream, maybe even beating our own estimation," they shared.

Calling Skyblivion merely a one-to-one remake would not do justice to the extensive work being done. The team is not just replicating the original game; they are enhancing it significantly. From ensuring that unique items truly stand out to revamping bosses like Mannimarco to meet their legendary status, the attention to detail is impressive. The livestream featured the revamped "A Brush with Death" quest, showcasing a beautifully reimagined painted world.
Adding an intriguing layer to Skyblivion's journey is the buzz around an official Oblivion remake. Earlier this year, whispers of an Oblivion remake surfaced, hinting at potential updates to the combat system and other features. Microsoft, however, has not confirmed these rumors. Interestingly, documents from the Activision Blizzard/FTC trial in 2023 inadvertently mentioned an Oblivion remaster, alongside other projects like an Indiana Jones game (now released) and a Fallout 3 remaster (yet to be confirmed).
The possibility of an official Oblivion relaunch by Microsoft and Bethesda adds a layer of uncertainty for Skyblivion. Bethesda's games have always thrived with a vibrant modding community, from classics to the latest like Starfield. The hope is that Skyblivion won't face the same setbacks as other fan projects like Fallout London as it approaches its anticipated release.
