Sony is reportedly rebooting the Starship Troopers franchise with a new film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 military sci-fi novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp, known for films like District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, is set to write and direct this new project under Sony's Columbia Pictures banner. Both Deadline and Variety have confirmed this development.
This upcoming Starship Troopers movie will not be a sequel or related to the 1997 cult classic directed by Paul Verhoeven, which famously satirized Heinlein's original work. Instead, Blomkamp's version aims to be a fresh take directly inspired by the novel itself.

The announcement of Blomkamp's involvement comes at an interesting time for Sony, as the studio has also recently announced a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game Helldivers. Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, draws heavy inspiration from Verhoeven's Starship Troopers, featuring soldiers fighting for a satirical fascist regime against alien bugs, all while promoting concepts of Liberty and Managed Democracy.
With both projects in development, Sony faces the challenge of managing two films that, while distinct, share thematic similarities. The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes that Blomkamp’s Starship Troopers will not be a remake of Verhoeven's film but will instead focus on the source material, which is known for its contrasting tone and themes compared to the satirical approach of the 1997 movie.
Currently, neither the new Starship Troopers nor the Helldivers movie has a confirmed release date, indicating that fans may have to wait some time before seeing either project come to fruition. Blomkamp's most recent directorial effort was Sony's Gran Turismo, an adaptation of the well-known PlayStation racing simulation series.
