A new Street Fighter movie has selected its challenger, I mean, director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the absurd comedy show The Eric Andre Show, will helm the new film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment.
Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" with the project, and the movie is already slated for a March 20, 2026 release date.
This marks yet another attempt to bring the iconic Street Fighter franchise to the big screen. Fans of the series will remember the 1994 film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While it may not have been a critical darling at the time, it has since become a beloved cult classic.
Details on casting for the new film are still under wraps, but fans can expect to see their favorite Street Fighter characters make an appearance.
Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind Talk to Me. However, they left the project last summer. The choice of Sakurai, who brings a background in absurdist comedy, suggests that Legendary might be steering the film in a more unconventional direction. As a fan of the more whimsical aspects of Street Fighter, this shift excites me.
In the meantime, fans can dive into the latest installment of the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as its newest fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review here.
