NetherRealm Studios, the developer behind Mortal Kombat 1, has unveiled the first gameplay footage of the T-1000, a new DLC guest character, and confirmed the addition of Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000's gameplay brings back iconic moments from Terminator 2, showcasing attacks like blade and hook arms that echo the moves of Mortal Kombat's Baraka and Kabal. One highlight includes the T-1000 transforming into a liquid metal blob, then executing an uppercut similar to that of Killer Instinct’s Glacius.
Voiced and modeled after actor Robert Patrick, who portrayed the T-1000 in the 1991 film, the character's teaser features a confrontation with Johnny Cage. The teaser concludes with a dramatic Fatality that recreates the famous chase scene from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor in a truck. In the Fatality, the T-1000 morphs out of the truck to unleash a barrage of bullets on Cage.
Simultaneously, NetherRealm announced that Madam Bo, a fan-favorite from the Mortal Kombat 1 story, will join the game as a Kameo fighter. Known as an elderly restaurant owner who courageously fights off Smoke and his goons, Madam Bo's brief gameplay appearance in the teaser shows her assisting the T-1000 during a match against Johnny Cage.
The T-1000 will be available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 during the early access period for Khaos Reigns owners, with a wider release on March 25. Madam Bo will also be available starting March 18 as a free content update for Khaos Reigns owners or as a standalone purchase.
As the final character in the Khaos Reigns expansion, the T-1000 follows other notable DLC fighters including Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Amidst speculation about future content, fans have been curious about whether NetherRealm will introduce a Kombat Pack 3, especially in light of questions surrounding Mortal Kombat 1's sales performance.
However, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav emphasized the company's plan to focus on just four key gaming titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
In September, Mortal Kombat development chief Ed Boon confirmed that NetherRealm had decided on its next project three years prior, while promising continued support for Mortal Kombat 1. Many fans speculate that the studio's next title could be a third installment in the Injustice series, although neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has officially confirmed this. The Injustice series, which began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 followed by Injustice 2 in 2017, was expected to alternate with Mortal Kombat releases. However, NetherRealm opted to release Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023 instead.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Ed Boon discussed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to the newer Unreal Engine 4 from Unreal Engine 3, which was used for Mortal Kombat 11. Boon emphasized the studio's commitment to safety and quality, while also leaving the door open for future Injustice games, stating, "Not at all," when asked if the franchise was closed off.
