Ubisoft Shoots Down 'xDefiant' F2P Shooter

The "Sunset" Begins

Ubisoft announced the termination of XDefiant's servers on June 3, 2025. The shutdown process commences December 3, 2024, halting new player registration, downloads, and in-game purchases. Refunds are underway.

"Players who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack will receive a full refund. Refunds for VC and DLC purchases made since November 3, 2024, are also being processed. Please allow up to 8 weeks for processing. Refunds should be completed by January 28, 2025. Contact Ubisoft support if you haven't received your refund by then." Note that only the Ultimate Founder’s Pack is eligible for a refund; Founder’s Pack and Founder’s Pack Elite are not.

Reasons Behind the Closure

Marie-Sophie Waubert, Ubisoft's Chief Studios and Portfolio Officer, explained the decision. Despite initial success and a dedicated player base, XDefiant failed to attract and retain a sufficient player count to compete in the highly competitive free-to-play market. The game fell short of profitability targets, making further investment unsustainable.

Team Transitions and Studio Impacts

Approximately half of XDefiant's team will transition to other roles within Ubisoft. However, the San Francisco and Osaka studios will close, and the Sydney studio will downsize, resulting in significant job losses (143 in San Francisco and a projected 134 in Osaka and Sydney). This follows previous layoffs in August 2024 affecting 45 employees across American studios and 33 in Toronto. Ubisoft is providing severance and career assistance to affected employees.

A Positive Reflection

While XDefiant initially achieved 5 million users shortly after its May 21, 2024 launch (and 15 million total players), its long-term performance didn't meet Ubisoft's financial expectations. Executive Producer Mark Rubin acknowledged the challenges of the free-to-play market and the ultimately unsustainable path. Despite the closure, he highlighted the positive player-developer interactions.

Season 3 Launch Despite Shutdown

Season 3 will still launch as planned, though details remain scarce. Speculation points to Assassin's Creed themed content. The original Season 3 roadmap, mentioning new factions, weapons, maps, and game modes, was removed from the website following the shutdown announcement. Access to Season 3 will be limited to players who acquired the game before December 3, 2024.

Early Reports of XDefiant's Struggles

Insider Gaming reported declining player numbers in August 2024. While initially denied by Rubin, the shutdown announcement confirms these concerns. The release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 between Seasons 2 and 3 likely further impacted XDefiant's player base.
