While the main narrative of the Jurassic Park series follows the release order closely, the short films and Netflix series provide additional context.
Jurassic Park kicks off the saga by bringing Michael Crichton's novel to the screen, introducing the thrilling concept of cloning dinosaurs using DNA extracted from prehistoric mosquitoes preserved in amber. Entrepreneur John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) envisions a theme park on Isla Nublar to showcase these wonders. Paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill), paleobotanist Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and mathematician Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) are invited to evaluate the park's safety, joined by Hammond's grandchildren, Lex and Tim Murphy. A tropical storm and sabotage lead to a power outage, unleashing the dinosaurs and turning a tour into a harrowing escape from velociraptors and a Tyrannosaurus rex.

Set and released four years after the original, The Lost World: Jurassic Park sees Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) returning, joined by paleontologist Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore).
The film unfolds on Isla Sorna, where Hammond had previously cloned dinosaurs. Left to their own devices after the island was abandoned, these dinosaurs become the backdrop for a power struggle within InGen, Hammond's company. His nephew, Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard), aims to exploit the dinosaurs for profit, while Hammond, Malcolm, and Harding strive to establish a nature preserve. Amidst these tensions, the characters navigate perilous encounters with wild dinosaurs, culminating in a T-Rex escaping to wreak havoc in San Diego. Malcolm and Harding work to recapture it non-lethally.
