Microsoft's journey into adapting its video games into movies and TV shows continues undeterred, despite the recent setback with the TV adaptation of Halo. Phil Spencer, the chief of Microsoft's gaming division, has expressed optimism about future projects in an interview with Variety, ahead of the release of A Minecraft Movie, which stars Jack Black and is based on the popular sandbox game Minecraft. The success of this upcoming film could pave the way for sequels, adding to the growing list of Microsoft's video game adaptations.
The company has seen a mix of outcomes with its adaptations. The Fallout series on Prime Video was a resounding success, with a second season already in the works. However, the Halo TV series, despite its high budget, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception. Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from these experiences, which is boosting their confidence to explore more adaptations.
"We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer told Variety. He highlighted that each project, whether successful or not, contributes to their understanding of what works in the realm of video game adaptations. "We learned from doing Halo. We learned from doing Fallout. So all of these build on themselves. And obviously we’ll have a couple that miss. But what I’d say to the Xbox community that likes this work is, ‘You’re going to see more, because we’re gaining confidence and we’re learning through this.’ "
Looking ahead, speculation abounds about which Xbox game might be next in line for adaptation. Netflix announced plans for a Gears of War live-action film and an animated series in 2022, though updates have been sparse. However, fans are eager to see if Dave Bautista, a Marvel Cinematic Universe star, will be cast as Marcus Fenix.

Given the success of Fallout, there's speculation that Prime Video might consider an Elder Scrolls/Skyrim TV show. However, Amazon's current focus on fantasy with The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time might influence their decision. Sony's successful Gran Turismo movie suggests that Microsoft might greenlight a Forza Horizon adaptation.
Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard opens up possibilities for adaptations of popular franchises like Call of Duty or a new attempt at a Warcraft movie. Jason Schreier's book, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, revealed that Netflix had been developing series for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo, which were later abandoned. Microsoft could potentially revive these projects.
On a lighter note, Microsoft now owns Crash Bandicoot, which could be ripe for an animated movie or TV series, especially given the success of similar adaptations like Mario and Sonic. The upcoming reboot of Fable in 2026 could also be a candidate for adaptation. And, despite the TV series' failure, there's always the possibility of Microsoft giving Halo another chance, perhaps as a big-budget movie.
Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further ahead in this space. Sony has seen success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and the upcoming second season of Twisted Metal. Sony has also announced plans for a Helldivers 2 movie, a film adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, and an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, with the God of War TV show set for two seasons. Nintendo, on the other hand, boasts the most successful video game adaptation with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and is working on a sequel and a live-action The Legend of Zelda adaptation.
