Wizards of the Coast Issues DMCA on Fan's Baldur's Gate 3 Stardew Valley Mod, Larian CEO Responds

Wizards of the Coast has recently issued a DMCA takedown notice targeting a fan-made mod for Stardew Valley, known as "Baldur's Village," which integrated characters from Baldur's Gate 3 into the popular farming simulation game. This action came despite earlier public commendation from Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke, who had praised the mod on Twitter, describing it as a labor of love and showcasing impressive craftsmanship.

The mod, which was released earlier this month, quickly caught the attention of the gaming community and received positive feedback, including from Vincke himself. However, the celebration was short-lived as Wizards of the Coast, the holder of the Dungeons & Dragons and Baldur's Gate intellectual properties, swiftly moved to remove the mod from circulation.

A spokesperson from Nexus Mods expressed hope that the takedown was an oversight by Wizards of the Coast, who often employ external agencies to monitor and address IP infringements. The spokesperson suggested that Wizards of the Coast might reconsider their decision, keeping fingers crossed for a positive outcome for "Baldur's Village."

In response to the takedown, Vincke took to Twitter once again, voicing his continued support for the mod while acknowledging the complexities of IP protection. He emphasized the value of fan-created content, stating, "Free quality fan mods highlighting your characters in other game genres are proof your work resonates and a unique form of word of mouth." Vincke argued that such mods should not be treated as commercial ventures infringing on intellectual property rights. He expressed hope for a resolution, noting, "Protecting your IP can be tricky but I do hope this gets settled. There are good ways of dealing with this."

This incident may be indicative of a broader initiative by Wizards of the Coast to protect the Baldur's Gate IP. During the recent Game Developers Conference, it was hinted that the company would soon unveil further plans for the franchise. It remains to be seen whether the takedown of the Stardew Valley mod was a strategic move related to these plans or simply a mistake that could be reversed. Wizards of the Coast has been contacted for further comment on the situation.
