Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us second chances at many classic games. Trials of Mana, Live A Live, the original Fire Emblem, and now, the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, finally bringing Miles Edgeworth's adventures to English-speaking audiences. The sequel cleverly expands on the original's plot, enhancing the overall experience.
These Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, showcasing the prosecution's side. Gameplay remains largely familiar: searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases. However, the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinct charm. While pacing can feel uneven at times, fans of the main series will appreciate this spin-off. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.
Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A handy dialog history feature is also included.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling dual experience. The official localization of the second game is a significant achievement, and the extra content makes this a fantastic package. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed previous entries, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, to say the least! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up to the obscure NES title retains the original's challenging physics-based platforming. The difficulty might be too much for some, but an easier mode is available.
Six lengthy levels provide a demanding but rewarding experience. The protagonist's star attack remains central to gameplay, serving as a weapon and puzzle-solving tool. Collectibles add extra replayability, unlocking customization options.
The game is challenging, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help maintain engagement. Gimmick! 2 successfully captures the essence of the original while adding its own unique elements. Fans of the first game and challenging platformers will find this a satisfying experience. However, casual players should be warned – it's as tough as its predecessor.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. While the Switch's hardware might struggle at times, the intense action, soundtrack, and visuals still deliver a fun experience.
Weapon management is key, juggling a main gun, a melee weapon for energy recharge, and a rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of weapon usage and dodging enemy fire is crucial.
While different from the original, Mecha Therion retains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids many genre clichés. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It offers plenty of fan service, with strong writing and meta-systems rewarding dedicated players. However, the limited number of repetitive mini-games might disappoint those unfamiliar with the franchise.
The game's presentation is solid, but the gameplay lacks depth for non-fans. Even for fans, the limited content and focus on fan service might lead to burnout.
While visually appealing and faithful to the source material, the game's limited content and repetitive gameplay hold it back. Fans might appreciate the unlockables, but overall, it feels underwhelming.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases Sunsoft's lesser-known 8-bit games, offering a glimpse into a different side of the publisher. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola, all fully localized for the first time in English.
The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The games themselves vary in quality, with some being more frustrating than others, but all possess a unique charm.
While not top-tier NES titles, these games offer a unique experience for Sunsoft fans and those interested in exploring lesser-known titles. The localization effort alone makes this collection worthwhile.
