While *Avowed* might not reinvent the wheel, it is a charming RPG that resonates deeply with fans of exploration. The game channels the spirit of *Morrowind*, an iconic RPG that set the benchmark for immersive digital worlds long before today's standards took hold.
In *Morrowind*, every element of the landscape—be it a rock, bush, mountain, or even the ocean floor—beckoned with the thrill of adventure. Obsidian Entertainment has ambitiously sought to recapture this sense of discovery, and from what I've experienced, they've done so with remarkable success.

The World of Pillars of Eternity

Set within the expansive universe of *Pillars of Eternity*, *Avowed* welcomes players into a meticulously crafted world, accessible even to those new to the series. While a background in the earlier games can enrich the experience, the narrative unfolds seamlessly through in-game dialogue and environmental storytelling.
The storyline centers on an emissary commissioned by the Emperor of Aedyr to delve into the mysteries of a fungal plague ravaging the souls of the populace and driving them to madness. In this universe, souls follow a cycle of death, oblivion, and rebirth. The protagonist, marked by the gods at birth with enigmatic plant-like or fungal growths on their head, is anything but ordinary. This divine mark instills fear and curiosity in those they encounter.

Upon arrival in the Living Lands, the protagonist faces a tumultuous introduction as their ship is assaulted by deranged Aedyran guards. Landing in the ironically named port city of Paradise, they find a city in disarray, with high-ranking officials missing and the gates locked tight. It's a scenario that will feel familiar to veterans of classic RPGs.
The joy of exploration becomes immediately apparent as the world unfolds. My initial foray into the waters near the port led to the discovery of sunken treasures and a close call with drowning. This soon led me to a smuggler's camp, where I overheard their schemes and narrowly escaped detection. Back in the city, I eagerly took on quests and began scouring every corner.
Treasures Beneath Every Stone

One highlight was breaking into a locked house, looting its contents, and then scaling scaffolding to reach a lighthouse. At the summit, I unearthed a treasure map, rare yellow-tier boots with a fascinating backstory, and enjoyed panoramic views. As night fell, the glowing mushrooms illuminated new paths and secrets.
The world is brimming with hidden gems. Beneath the lighthouse, in the sewers, a chest lay concealed under spiderwebs, waiting to be revealed by fire. Perched on beams, a nest held coins, while a cliffside backpack overflowed with goodies. Below, a sunbathing skeleton offered a poignant scene. Even tossing an ice grenade into the water to freeze it momentarily allowed me to snatch submerged treasures.
Stories Waiting to Be Discovered

The game is filled with such moments of discovery. Supplies can be found on rooftops, behind waterfalls, and atop hills, each leading to new quests, rare artifacts, and intriguing narratives. In the slums, breaking into a shack introduced me to a blind man and his grieving wife, threatened by mercenaries. Another quest had me retrieving a nobleman's lost ring from a sewer, which conveniently boosted my health regeneration—an item I decided to keep.
Another poignant moment came when I found two lovers who had perished together. This led to a lift heading to the northern outskirts where guards were investigating a dead smuggler. Further exploration took me through a reptilian camp and a battle with a formidable giant, challenging my combat prowess and gear.
Endless Possibilities and Exploration

In just eight hours, I encountered countless adventures without touching the main quest or engaging in repetitive grinding. My focus was on exploration, experimenting with different character builds, and understanding how various items interacted. Whether wielding a shield and staff or switching to heavy armor and melee weapons, each decision unveiled new possibilities.
With numerous questions still unanswered and many systems yet to be explored, my journey in *Avowed* is far from over. The path ahead promises hidden chests, untold stories, and forgotten treasures. For now, the game offers an endless array of discoveries that remind me why RPGs remain one of the most captivating genres in gaming.
