Pixar: Original Films Risky, But Sequels Uninspired

Pixar's Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter has addressed the studio's current difficulties in developing fresh films and franchises, with the new release "Elio" facing significant commercial challenges.
Emphasizing the need to "anticipate audience desires before they even realize them," Docter warned that the alternative is simply giving viewers "more of what they already know"—a path leading to an endless cycle of sequels and repetitive content.
"We'd end up making 'Toy Story 27'," remarked Docter during his appearance at Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies Summit, just ahead of his studio's latest film premiere.
In the United States, "Elio" garnered a modest $20.8 million in its opening weekend, marking the lowest debut for any Pixar film. It faced stiff competition from other new releases, including "28 Years Later" and the recent live-action adaptation of "How To Train Your Dragon".
Overseas, the film has earned $14 million, bringing its current global total to $34.8 million—a figure far below its reported $150 million production budget, not including marketing expenses.
"It's a challenging period. Our focus must remain on creating films driven by our own vision and conviction," stated Docter. "The creative effort required is immense, whether a project succeeds financially or not. You can't always predict the outcome; sometimes, you just find that perfect combination of elements."
While "Elio" has been well-received by critics, it has not captured the widespread audience interest Pixar had anticipated. This stands in stark contrast to the studio's previous film, "Inside Out 2," which surpassed all expectations to become Disney's highest-grossing film ever, earning $1.69 billion worldwide.

Beyond the performance of individual films, broader industry trends are at play. These include lingering audience hesitancy stemming from the pandemic and a growing expectation, formed during that era, for animated films to quickly become available on streaming platforms.
To manage these risks, Docter explained that Pixar is adopting a strategy of alternating between original films and sequels to proven hits. Following this pattern, "Toy Story 5" is slated for 2026. While not the extreme "Toy Story 27" Docter mentioned, this will be another installment in a series many felt concluded perfectly with "Toy Story 3," especially after the underperformance of the spin-off "Lightyear."
Looking forward, Pixar's upcoming lineup reflects Docter's described approach, balancing new concepts with franchise continuations. After "Toy Story 5," 2026 will also introduce the body-swap comedy "Hoppers," followed by the feline adventure "Gatto" in 2027. These will be succeeded by "Incredibles 3" in 2028 and "Coco 2" in 2029.
