The release of Patch 8 for *Baldur's Gate 3* has significantly boosted player numbers on Steam, setting developer Larian Studios up for success as they shift focus to their next major project. Launched last week, Patch 8 introduced 12 new subclasses and a brand-new photo mode, sparking a surge in player engagement as fans eagerly tested these new features.
Over the weekend, *Baldur's Gate 3* achieved a concurrent player peak of 169,267 on Steam—an impressive milestone for a single-player focused role-playing game in its second year. While Sony and Microsoft keep PlayStation and Xbox player numbers under wraps, the surge on Steam speaks volumes about the game's enduring popularity.
Reflecting on Patch 8's impact, Larian's chief, Swen Vincke, tweeted optimistically about the game's future. He credited not only the patch but also the thriving mod support for *Baldur's Gate 3*'s continued success. "With mod support thriving, I think the game will now continue to do well for quite some time," Vincke said. This sustained interest allows Larian to concentrate on their next big venture. "We've got big shoes to fill," Vincke added, acknowledging the high expectations following *Baldur's Gate 3*'s success.
Patch 8 marks the final major update for *Baldur's Gate 3*, closing a chapter on what has been a remarkable period for Larian. The game, which launched to critical acclaim and achieved massive commercial success in 2023, has continued to perform strongly through 2024 and into 2025.
In a surprising move, Larian announced their intention to move away from *Baldur's Gate 3* and the Dungeons & Dragons universe to work on a new, undisclosed project. They even imposed a media blackout to focus entirely on this mystery game.
Meanwhile, D&D owner Hasbro has hinted at continuing the *Baldur's Gate* series. Speaking at the Game Developers Conference, Hasbro's SVP of digital games, Dan Ayoub, revealed that there is significant interest in the franchise following Larian's departure. "We're kind of working out our plans for the future and what we're going to be doing with that," Ayoub said. "And actually, in pretty short order, we're going to have some stuff to talk about around that."
Ayoub did not specify whether this would involve a new *Baldur's Gate* game or perhaps a crossover project similar to previous collaborations with *Magic: The Gathering*. However, he expressed a long-term goal of seeing a *Baldur's Gate 4* come to fruition, albeit acknowledging that such a project would require time. "It's somewhat of an unenviable position," he noted. "We're not in a hurry. We're going to take a very measured approach... We've got a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it."
