Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Rumors
Despite reports suggesting his return, Chris Evans has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his comeback alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously told Esquire that his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie subsequently confirmed that Evans himself denied this, stating he is "happily retired."
Evans' statement to Esquire firmly shuts down the recurring rumors that have circulated since Avengers: Endgame. He confirmed he's no longer responding to such speculation.
While Evans has appeared in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine, playing his pre-MCU character Johnny Storm, this was a smaller, comedic role significantly different from his leading Captain America arc.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, after his assault and harassment conviction. Majors' departure, given his planned role as the MCU's next Thanos-level villain, has reportedly caused significant disruption.
Marvel has since announced Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., as the new primary antagonist. This announcement fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning, although no further confirmations have been made.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed his character's absence from Avengers: Doomsday but will feature in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, in a "central role." The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, potentially including Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter.
