Unlike the recent Final Fantasy collaboration, which included a complete draftable Magic set alongside four pre-built Commander decks, this Sonic crossover adheres to the pattern of similar partnerships by focusing solely on three Secret Lair releases. Secret Lair refers to Magic's timed series featuring a small selection of specific cards with unique artwork, all sold directly by Wizards of the Coast rather than in randomized booster packs.
In this offering, the Turbo Gear release includes six existing Magic cards reimagined with new Sonic-themed artwork and names, plus one token card. Among them are several Commander format staples, such as Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves—naturally, Sonic's iconic footwear deserves its own cards. Also noteworthy is the legendary vehicle Weatherlight, which appears here as Tornado, Sonic's biplane. Thanks to a recent rules update, you can even choose to use it as your Commander if you wish.
According to Wizards of the Coast, this release is designed to pair well with the cards in another drop that highlights Sonic's characters. While we can't reveal those just yet, one example mentioned in the Turbo Gear store description involves equipping The Reaver Cleaver—reimagined as Knuckles's Gloves—to Knuckles himself. This approach aligns with previous crossover releases, like 2023's Tomb Raider, where reprinted cards are intended to synergize seamlessly with new Legendary creatures, offering a sort of starter kit for building your own Commander deck.
The Turbo Gear Secret Lair drop (along with the other two) will be available starting July 14 at 9 AM PT on the official Secret Lair website. It will retail for $29.99 for the non-foil version or $39.99 for the foil edition. Be sure to act quickly, as these releases are limited in quantity—and if past crossovers are any indication, they're likely to sell out fast.
