In early 2025, a Final Fantasy XIV mod ignited concerns about player stalking due to reports of its ability to harvest hidden player data. This included sensitive information such as character details, retainer information, linked alternate characters, and more.
The mod, "Playerscope," tracked player data within a user's vicinity, transmitting it to a central database controlled by the mod's creator. This exposed information normally inaccessible through in-game tools. Specifically, it leveraged "Content ID" and "Account ID" to track players across multiple characters, exploiting the Dawntrail expansion's Content ID system designed for account-wide blacklisting.
Opting out required joining the Playerscope Discord server, implying widespread data scraping of players outside this community. The inherent privacy risk sparked significant community backlash, with many labeling the mod's purpose as "stalking."
After its initial appearance on Github, leading to a surge in popularity, Playerscope was removed from Github due to terms of service violations. While reportedly mirrored on Gittea and Gitflic, IGN confirmed the absence of Playerscope repositories on those platforms. However, the mod might still circulate within private communities.
Yoshida stated that the development and operations teams were considering requesting removal and deletion of the tool, and pursuing legal action. He reassured players that sensitive account information like addresses and payment details could not be accessed through these tools. He urged players to avoid using third-party tools and not assist in their distribution, citing violations of the Final Fantasy XIV User Agreement and potential safety risks.
While third-party tools like Advanced Combat Tracker are commonly used (and data cross-referenced on sites like FFlogs), Yoshida's legal threat represents a significant escalation.
Community Response:
The community reacted critically to Yoshida's statement, with many pointing out the lack of solutions addressing the underlying vulnerability allowing such mods to function. Several comments highlighted the need for client-side adjustments to prevent data exposure, suggesting the statement lacked a proactive approach to solving the root problem. The Playerscope author remains silent.
