Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the end of a brief but intriguing foray into narrative gaming. This decision may come as a surprise to many, given that the games had cultivated a solid player base. So, what led to the cancellation of Netflix Stories? Let's delve into the details!
The news, initially reported by Variety, reflects a strategic pivot at Netflix Games. The company is shifting its focus towards mobile titles that include party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and other interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on TVs.
Despite this shift, Boss Fight Entertainment, the studio behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects, such as the much-anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled: What's Next?
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the Netflix Stories games consistently ranked among the top-played titles on the Netflix Games platform. Recent reports place it fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which measures playtime rather than downloads.
Looking at the future of the series, the final interactive title will be Love Is Blind: NYC. After its release, no new games will be developed under the Netflix Stories banner. This announcement arrives just as the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, slated for an April 8th release.
Unlike its predecessors, The Love Contract was not based on any existing Netflix IP but was an original romance story featuring an actress navigating a complex love triangle involving a Hollywood star and a billionaire, all amidst fame, scandal, and the drama of fake dating. Regrettably, this game has been cancelled.
While no new titles will be added, the existing Netflix Stories games will remain accessible. Fans can continue to enjoy titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels for popular series like Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been scrapped.
So, there you have it! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and haven't tried these games yet, you can still find them on the Google Play Store.
