Nicolas Cage Calls AI Performances a 'Dead End', as 'Robots Cannot Reflect the Human Condition'

Nicolas Cage delivered a powerful message against the use of artificial intelligence in acting during his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor in Dream Scenario. He warned that allowing AI to influence performances leads actors down "a dead end," arguing that robots are incapable of capturing the complexities of the human condition.

Cage expressed gratitude to director Kristoffer Borgli, praising his work on Dream Scenario, before shifting his focus to the burgeoning AI landscape. He declared his belief in the importance of human creativity and emotional expression in art, stating that AI cannot replicate the authentic human experience necessary for compelling performances. He emphasized that allowing AI manipulation, even slightly, compromises the integrity and truth of artistic expression, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over genuine artistry.

He stressed that art's purpose is to reflect the internal and external human experience through a thoughtful and emotional creative process—a process he believes AI is fundamentally incapable of replicating. He cautioned that relying on AI will result in a loss of heart, edge, and ultimately, a genuine human response to life, replacing it with a robotic interpretation. He urged his fellow actors to protect themselves from AI interference, championing authentic and honest expression.

Cage's concerns are echoed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field where AI-generated performances are becoming increasingly prevalent. Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have both expressed concerns about the impact of AI on voice actors' livelihoods and the potential for exploitation. Filmmakers, too, are divided on the issue, with Tim Burton expressing his unease with AI-generated art, while Zack Snyder advocates for embracing the technology.
