Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 GameCube Controller Compatibility, Warns of Potential Issues

May 03,2025 Author: George

Nintendo has addressed concerns about the compatibility of its newly released GameCube controller with the Nintendo Switch 2, revealing that there might be "issues" when using it to play modern games on the new console.

The GameCube controller was showcased during the 60-minute Nintendo Direct earlier this month. At the time, it was noted that the controller's fine print indicated it was "only compatible with Nintendo GameCube" games available in the Nintendo Switch Online retro library, and not with other Switch 2 games.

Nintendo has since provided further clarification on the controller's compatibility. The company reiterated that the GameCube controller is primarily designed for use with GameCube games. While it may be possible to use the controller with other Nintendo Switch 2 games, players should be aware that there "may be some issues" due to the lack of "all the buttons and features" found on modern controllers.

In a statement to Nintendo Life, Nintendo emphasized, "The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games. Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch."
