The highly anticipated Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 graphics cards are set to launch on January 30th, but concerns about limited availability are already surfacing. Reports from various retailers and manufacturers suggest significant shortages are likely.
With eager consumers already lining up outside stores, the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are expected to be incredibly popular, despite their hefty price tags of $1,999 and $999 respectively.
MSI, a major manufacturer, attributes the initial scarcity to the Lunar New Year, impacting the initial shipment of cards. They anticipate stock levels will improve in February.

Retailers like Overclockers UK have confirmed extremely low initial stock allocations for the RTX 5090, reporting only "single digits" received. Similar concerns were voiced by U.S. retailer PowerGPU, predicting severely limited availability.
In response to the growing concerns, Nvidia representative Tim@Nvidia issued a statement on the company's forum acknowledging the anticipated high demand and potential for stock-outs. They assured consumers that additional stock is being shipped daily.
However, the limited supply has already attracted scalpers. Several listings on eBay show pre-sale offers for the RTX 5090 at exorbitant prices, with one Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for $5,750 – a massive markup of 187% over the MSRP.
Adding to Nvidia's challenges, their share price experienced a significant drop (16.86%) following the announcement of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, raising concerns about the future of their datacenter GPU sales. This may further impact their ability to prioritize consumer GPU stock allocation.
