These tools allow you to control SMTs and other performance settings. This guide has been updated to include detailed steps for installing Decky Loader and Power Tools, as well as instructions for restoring Decky Loader after a Steam Deck update.
Before Installing EmuDeck
Before you dive into installing EmuDeck, make sure you have the following essentials to run emulators and store your beloved Game Boy games:
- A fully charged Steam Deck.
- An A2 microSD card for installing games and emulators.
- Legally acquired Game Boy ROMs.
- A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for easier navigation and transferring ROMs (or a wired setup with a Steam Deck docking system).
Change Developer Mode
To get started, you'll need to enable Developer Mode:
- Press the Steam button.
- Navigate to the System menu and toggle Developer Mode on.
- Within the Developer menu, enable CEF Debugging.
- Head to the Power menu and choose Switch to Desktop Mode.
Download EmuDeck In Desktop Mode
Once in Desktop Mode, connect a keyboard and mouse to streamline the process:
- Launch a web browser like DuckDuckGo or Mozilla Firefox and navigate to the EmuDeck download page.
- Click "Download" at the top-right of the page, select Steam OS, and choose "Download for Free."

- You can install all emulators or specifically select RetroArch, Emulation Station, and Steam ROM Manager, then click "Continue."
- Enable Auto Save.

- Launch the EmuDeck program and select Quick Settings.
- Toggle AutoSave On.
- Choose Controller Layout Match.
- Enable Bezels.

Adding Game Boy Games To The Steam Deck
With EmuDeck set up, it’s time to add your Game Boy games:
- Use Dolphin File Manager to access your files.
- Click on "Primary" under Removable Devices on the left panel.
- Navigate to the Emulation folder, then to ROMS, and locate the "gb" folder.
- Ensure your ROMs are correctly named (refer to the table below).

- Once the games and their cover art are added, select "Save to Steam."
- Wait for the "Done adding/removing entries" message, then close Steam ROM Manager and return to Gaming Mode.

Restoring Decky Loader After A Steam Deck Update
Major Steam Deck updates can sometimes break compatibility with third-party apps like Decky Loader. Here’s how to restore it:
- Switch to Desktop Mode via the Steam button and Power menu.
- Open a browser and return to the Decky Loader GitHub page to download it again.
- After downloading, select only the Execute option and enter your pseudo password when prompted.
