The Steam Deck is a versatile gaming device that can handle modern games with ease, thanks to its PC-like capabilities. Its high level of customization makes it a top choice for gamers looking to dive into the world of retro gaming, especially for classic Game Boy titles. With EmuDeck, you can transform your Steam Deck into a powerhouse for playing these timeless games.

Despite their age, Game Boy games hold a special charm due to the dedication and craftsmanship that went into their creation, even within the constraints of a limited color palette. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to install EmuDeck and enjoy Game Boy games on your Steam Deck.

Updated January 13, 2024, by Michael Llewellyn: Although Game Boy games don’t require much power to run, achieving a perfect emulation experience on the Steam Deck involves installing Decky Loader and the Power Tools plugin. These tools allow you to control SMTs and other performance settings. This guide has been updated to include detailed steps for installing Decky Loader and Power Tools, as well as instructions for restoring Decky Loader after a Steam Deck update.

Before Installing EmuDeck

Before you dive into installing EmuDeck, make sure you have the following essentials to run emulators and store your beloved Game Boy games:

  • A fully charged Steam Deck.
  • An A2 microSD card for installing games and emulators.

- Legally acquired Game Boy ROMs.

  • A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse for easier navigation and transferring ROMs (or a wired setup with a Steam Deck docking system).

Change Developer Mode

To get started, you'll need to enable Developer Mode:

  • Press the Steam button.
  • Navigate to the System menu and toggle Developer Mode on.
  • Within the Developer menu, enable CEF Debugging.
  • Head to the Power menu and choose Switch to Desktop Mode.

Download EmuDeck In Desktop Mode

Once in Desktop Mode, connect a keyboard and mouse to streamline the process:

  • Launch a web browser like DuckDuckGo or Mozilla Firefox and navigate to the EmuDeck download page.
  • Click "Download" at the top-right of the page, select Steam OS, and choose "Download for Free."
  • Opt for Recommended Settings, then select Custom Install.
  • In the EmuDeck menu, choose the SD card image named "Primary."
  • You can install all emulators or specifically select RetroArch, Emulation Station, and Steam ROM Manager, then click "Continue."
  • Enable Auto Save.
  • Skip through the next screens and select "Finish" to complete the installation.

After installation, customize EmuDeck to your liking:

  • Launch the EmuDeck program and select Quick Settings.

- Toggle AutoSave On.

  • Turn off SMTs and set the Threads to 4.
  • Return to the QAM, go to the Performance menu, and enable Advanced View.
  • Turn on Manual GPU Clock Control and increase the GPU Clock Frequency to 1200.
  • Enable Per Game Profile to save these settings for each game.

Restoring Decky Loader After A Steam Deck Update

Major Steam Deck updates can sometimes break compatibility with third-party apps like Decky Loader. Here’s how to restore it:

  • Switch to Desktop Mode via the Steam button and Power menu.
  • Open a browser and return to the Decky Loader GitHub page to download it again.
  • After downloading, select only the Execute option and enter your pseudo password when prompted.
  • Create a pseudo password if you haven’t already, choosing a strong and memorable one.
  • Restart your Steam Deck in Gaming Mode to ensure Decky Loader and its plugins are restored.

With these steps, you're now equipped to enjoy Game Boy games on your Steam Deck with optimized settings. The larger screen of the Steam Deck makes it an ideal platform for reliving these classic titles.
