Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: Power Rangers is reportedly gearing up for a thrilling live-action series on Disney+. The Wrap has revealed that Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the talented duo behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians, are in discussions to not only write but also showrun and produce this anticipated series, in collaboration with Disney+ and 20th Century TV.
Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, aims to breathe new life into the series, targeting a fresh generation of viewers while ensuring that existing fans remain engaged and excited. This approach reflects Hasbro's commitment to revitalizing beloved brands for today's audiences.
For those who grew up in the '90s, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers was more than just a TV show; it was a cultural phenomenon. Its teenage superheroes and their awe-inspiring mechs, which could merge to form a colossal robot, captured the imaginations of countless young viewers.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers franchise from its original owner, Saban Properties, in a deal valued at $522 million. At the time of the acquisition, Hasbro's chairman and CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed enthusiasm about the brand's potential across various platforms, including toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, with an eye toward expanding its global reach.
This move came on the heels of the 2017 movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier take on the Power Rangers universe. Despite hopes for a franchise relaunch, the film's underwhelming box office results led to the cancellation of planned sequels, prompting Saban to sell the rights to Hasbro shortly thereafter.
Hasbro's vision extends beyond Power Rangers. The company is also developing other captivating projects such as a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms at Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series also in development at Netflix, and plans for a Magic: The Gathering cinematic universe. These initiatives showcase Hasbro's ambition to leverage its iconic properties across multiple entertainment formats, engaging fans worldwide.
