Housemarque, the studio behind the critically acclaimed 2022 roguelite shooter Returnal, has just unveiled their next thrilling venture: Saros. Set to release in 2026 exclusively for the PlayStation 5, and optimized for the PS5 Pro, Saros promises to deliver an electrifying gaming experience. The game features the talented Rahul Kohli, adding a layer of star power to this highly anticipated title.
Showcased during the latest PlayStation State of Play, Saros captures the essence of a classic Housemarque production. In the game, players assume the role of Arjun Devraj, a Solatri enforcer on a quest for truth on a mysterious planet gripped by an eclipse and home to formidable entities. The game's atmosphere and thematic elements echo those of Returnal, particularly with its roguelike mechanics underscored by the mantra "come back stronger." The gameplay footage revealed a barrage of fireballs, a nod to Housemarque's signature bullet-hell style.
Creative director Gregory Louden describes Saros as the "ultimate evolution" of Housemarque's gameplay-centric approach. While it's a fresh single-player IP, it builds upon the third-person action foundation laid by Returnal. However, Saros introduces a significant twist: permanent resources and progression. Although the world shifts with each player's death, players can now permanently enhance their weapons and suits, setting it apart from its predecessor.
Housemarque plans to reveal more details later this year, including an extended gameplay demonstration that fans eagerly await. For those who want to stay updated on all the announcements from the PlayStation State of Play, don't miss our comprehensive recap [ttpp].
