Fans of the Star Wars universe have something exciting to look forward to with Shawn Levy's upcoming film. The director, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, is still actively involved in the project, and we have a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. In a recent chat with Screen Rant, Tropper expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has shed some light on the timeline, noting that the film is "all post-[the first] nine." Specifically, she mentioned that Levy's film will take place "maybe five or six years out" from the events of Episode IX, making it the first to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also confirmed in an interview with Deadline that the film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, expected in 2026. She is producing both projects and emphasized that Levy's movie will come after the Mando film. Additionally, it has been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star, adding another layer of anticipation for fans.
Tropper's optimistic comments suggest that the project is progressing well, although fans will need to wait until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027, for its release. This patience will be worth it, as Disney has not released a Star Wars film since the 2019 release of The Rise of Skywalker, which received mixed reviews. Several planned films have been canceled since then, including projects from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A previously scheduled Star Wars movie for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a New Republic movie directed by Dave Filoni set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi film led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order project directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley return as Rey following the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This project has undergone several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping down after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating she will feature in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further. X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which contrary to initial reports, will not be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode. This series promises to keep fans engaged while they await the highly anticipated film from Shawn Levy and other exciting projects in the Star Wars universe.
