Will Smith has opened up about his decision to pass on Christopher Nolan's Inception, marking his first public comments on the career-defining choice.
The groundbreaking 2010 sci-fi thriller explores layered dreamscapes where corporate thieves infiltrate subconscious minds. As the psychological heist unfolds across multiple dream levels, what begins as professional deception descends into personal turmoil.
Following Brad Pitt's earlier rejection, Nolan reportedly approached Smith before casting Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role. Fifteen years after the film's release, Smith finally shares his reasoning.
"This might be the first time I'm admitting this publicly," Smith revealed during an interview with UK's Kiss Xtra radio.
"When Nolan first pitched Inception to me, I simply didn't grasp the concept. Alternate reality narratives often struggle in pitch meetings - though now I regret passing on both opportunities," he confessed.
The "both opportunities" reference nods to Smith's well-documented regret about declining The Matrix's Neo role. His Inception admission adds another major franchise to his list of cinematic what-ifs. The film became a global phenomenon, earning $839 million worldwide and cementing DiCaprio's reputation.

While Inception's ambiguous spinning top ending famously leaves audiences questioning reality's nature, Nolan later clarified protagonist Cobb's emotional resolution - his joyful reunion with family makes the answer irrelevant.
Though Smith frequently jokes about missing The Matrix opportunity, his Inception revelation surfaces new insight into his career choices. Despite these regrets, Smith boasts an impressive sci-fi legacy including Independence Day, Men in Black, and I Am Legend.
