Sony has officially announced that Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025. Alongside this exciting news, a new trailer has been released, introducing the Yōtei Six — the gang members protagonist Atsu is determined to hunt down. The trailer also showcases a new gameplay mechanic allowing players to delve into Atsu’s past, offering deeper insights into her motivations and the tragedies she has endured.
In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Andrew Goldfarb, Sucker Punch's senior communications manager, elaborated on the game's narrative. The story unfolds 16 years after a devastating event in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), where the Yōtei Six brutally murdered Atsu’s family and left her for dead, pinned to a burning ginkgo tree. Miraculously, Atsu survived and honed her skills in combat and survival. Now, she returns to Ezo with a vengeance, armed with the very katana that was used against her, to hunt down the Yōtei Six: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito. Her journey, however, evolves beyond mere revenge as she forms new alliances and finds a renewed purpose.
Ghost of Yōtei comes to PS5 on 2nd October.

By setting the release for October, Sony positions Ghost of Yōtei in the competitive fall 2025 gaming market, potentially clashing with the eagerly awaited Grand Theft Auto 6. However, with no concrete release date announced yet for GTA 6, Sony seems to have seized the moment to make their announcement.
The new trailer balances story elements with gameplay, showcasing the stunning environments of Ezo, Atsu’s horseback journeys, and intense combat sequences. Sucker Punch aims to offer players greater control over Atsu’s narrative compared to the first game. Creative director Jason Connell emphasized their efforts to create a less repetitive open world, stating, “One challenge that comes with making an open-world game is the repetitive nature of doing the same thing over again. We wanted to balance against that and find unique experiences.”

Players will have the freedom to choose which of the Yōtei Six to pursue first, as well as engage in other activities like tracking dangerous targets, claiming bounties, and learning new combat skills from weapon sensei. Goldfarb highlighted the diverse experiences awaiting players in Ezo, describing it as “wild, and as deadly as it is beautiful.” The open world includes both unexpected dangers and peaceful retreats, with familiar activities from Ghost of Tsushima making a return. Players can also build campfires anywhere in the open world to rest under the stars.
Ghost of Yōtei introduces new weapon types such as ōdachi, kusarigama, and dual katanas. The game promises expansive sightlines, breathtaking skies with twinkling stars and auroras, and realistically swaying vegetation. Additionally, the game will take full advantage of the enhanced performance and visuals offered by the PlayStation 5 Pro.
