Valve has debunked recent claims about a "major" data breach on its Steam platform, firmly stating there was "NOT a breach" of Steam systems.
While concerns circulated regarding reports of 89+ million compromised user records, Steam's investigation revealed that while outdated SMS messages were exposed, these temporary codes contained no sensitive personal information.
In an official announcement on Steam, Valve clarified: "Our analysis of the leaked data confirms it only contained expired one-time authentication codes (valid for just 15 minutes) and their associated phone numbers. Crucially, this information wasn't linked to Steam accounts, passwords, payment details, or any private user data."
"These obsolete SMS codes pose no threat to account security. Furthermore, all critical account changes via SMS trigger immediate email or Steam message confirmations," Valve's security team emphasized.
Valve seized this opportunity to strongly recommend users activate Steam Mobile Authenticator for enhanced security, noting it's "the most effective method for receiving critical security notifications regarding your account."
With cyber threats increasing exponentially and Steam's massive user base exceeding 89 million accounts, these concerns were understandable. The gaming industry witnessed its most notorious security incident in 2011 when PlayStation Network endured nearly a month-long outage affecting 77 million user accounts.
