Avowed's Success Spurs Sequel or Expansion Talk
Following the successful launch of Avowed, Obsidian and Microsoft are reportedly pleased with sales figures, hinting at potential future installments. In a recent Bloomberg interview (February 22, 2025), Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel expressed strong interest in expanding the franchise. While no official plans have been announced, Patel stated her desire to continue working within the established world, leveraging the team's expertise and the game's established lore. She emphasized the potential for both sequels and expansions, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it."

A Challenging Development Journey
Patel also candidly discussed the complexities of Avowed's development, highlighting the numerous challenges and pivots the team navigated. The project, initiated in 2018 amidst Obsidian's sale considerations, faced various hurdles. The acquisition by Microsoft in 2020 brought changes, including the removal of certain features and the cancellation of the multiplayer aspect. A leadership change and game reboot in January 2021 further reshaped the project. Patel described managing a team of over 80 developers as a significant undertaking, noting the inherent "messiness" of large-scale game development before ultimately achieving a cohesive vision. Key changes included a focus on the Pillars of Eternity lore and a shift from an open world to open zones, allowing for greater refinement of individual areas.

Pillars of Eternity Tactics on the Horizon?
The resurgence of the Pillars of Eternity franchise with Avowed has sparked interest in a new spin-off. In a February 23, 2025 Twitch livestream, Pillars of Eternity Director Josh Sawyer revealed Obsidian's enthusiasm for developing a tactics game within the Pillars of Eternity universe. While acknowledging the challenges of defining scope, budget, and visual fidelity, Sawyer confirmed significant internal interest in such a project. This follows previous reports of developer interest in a Pillars of Eternity tactics game, and Avowed's success may provide the impetus for its development. Sawyer also reiterated his commitment to Pillars of Eternity 3, though he envisions a significantly larger budget, comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million investment.

Avowed is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Stay tuned for further updates!
