Developers of Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era Reveal Details About the Swarm Faction

Unfrozen Studio, the developers behind Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era, have unveiled further details about the intriguing Swarm faction, following an initial teaser. The team delved into their creative process, explaining the evolution of the faction from its "Inferno" concept to the final "Swarm" iteration, and its integration into the Jadame continent's narrative.

The Swarm's defining characteristic is its remarkable adaptability. Certain creatures possess abilities directly influenced by enemy unit levels; the greater the disparity, the more potent the damage inflicted. Others, like mantises, strategically select from three distinct abilities each turn. A unique survival mechanism allows creatures such as worms and locusts to consume corpses, facilitating both healing and power boosts – a skill also learnable by player heroes.

In Olden Era, the insectoid Swarm assumes the role of the demonic force, an entity only briefly alluded to in Might & Magic 8. While respecting established lore, the developers infused the Swarm with elements of body horror and occultism, transforming it from a mere insect colony into a devoted cult under a single, powerful leader. Each member functions as part of a vast, interconnected consciousness, existing solely to execute its master's commands.

Gameplay revolves around a "mono-faction" mechanic, rewarding players who utilize exclusively Swarm units due to their synergistic enhancements. Swarm troops can deploy cocoons, whose health scales with army size. Upon hatching, these larvae provide temporary reinforcements, enabling dynamic battlefield adaptations.

The Swarm's aggressive playstyle is highlighted by its corpse-devouring healing and power-ups, coupled with unique abilities that shift based on enemy strength. This fosters a direct confrontation strategy, presenting players with a novel and engaging combat experience.
