The Elder Scrolls Online has answered player prayers by introducing subclass options - a feature fans have clamored for since launch. Discover how this game-changing system works and what else is coming in future updates.
Marking its 10th anniversary, Zenimax Online Studios unveiled exciting plans during ESO Direct 2025. The standout announcement? Subclassing - a system players have desperately wanted since the game launched in 2014.
For too long, ESO's rigid class structure forced players to create new characters whenever they wanted to try different skill trees. This frustrating limitation is finally being addressed through subclass customization. Players will soon be able to mix-and-match abilities without starting over.
Here's how it works: Reach level 50 to unlock subclass options. Keep one core skill line from your main class while swapping out two others from any of ESO's six available classes. This creates staggering flexibility - over 3000 possible combinations for unique playstyles.
Game Director Rich Lambert explained extensive balancing testing ensures this won't disrupt ESO's carefully crafted gameplay balance, saying the team is "confident in the system's current state" despite expected power level adjustments.
Zenimax is shifting to seasonal content drops, allowing more experimental updates and quicker community feedback implementation. Studio Director Matt Firor described this as "our chance to push boundaries while maintaining ESO's rich storytelling traditions."
The first seasonal chapter - Seasons of the Worm Cult - concludes a decade-long narrative arc beginning with Molag Bal's original invasion. Players will explore the mysterious Isle of Solstice while investigating the Worm Cult's shocking resurgence.
Producer Susan Kath clarified future seasons will typically span 3-6 months (unlike Worm Cult's extended runtime). The team also hinted at "remix seasons" revisiting past stories, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed update already in development.
The newly announced Content Pass bundles current and upcoming releases including:
Both editions include exclusive collectibles:
Limited-time anniversary rewards include:
The Premium Edition grants access to all previous expansions and classes:
Through these ambitious updates, ESO celebrates its decade-long legacy while building toward an equally bright future. The upcoming subclass system finally delivers player freedom while seasonal content promises fresh adventures alongside nostalgic callbacks. Available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
