Final Fantasy XIV North American Servers Suffer Major Outage; Power Outage Suspected
A significant server outage impacted all four North American data centers for Final Fantasy XIV on January 5th, beginning around 8:00 PM Eastern Time. Initial reports and player accounts on social media suggest the outage stemmed from a local power failure in the Sacramento area, possibly due to a blown transformer. Service was restored within an hour.
This event contrasts with the persistent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that plagued the game throughout 2024. DDoS attacks, which flood servers with false information, caused high latency and disconnections. While Square Enix employed mitigation strategies, these attacks proved difficult to completely prevent. Players sometimes used VPNs as a mitigating measure.
This recent incident, however, appears to be a localized issue. Reddit users reported hearing a loud explosion or popping sound in Sacramento, consistent with a power transformer failure, around the time of the outage. The fact that European, Japanese, and Oceanic data centers remained unaffected further supports this theory.
Currently, Square Enix is investigating the cause. While the Aether, Crystal, and Primal data centers have returned to service, the Dynamis data center was still offline at the time of this writing.
This latest setback comes as Final Fantasy XIV prepares for ambitious plans in 2025, including the release of a mobile version. The long-term impact of these recurring server issues remains to be seen.
