Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, incorrectly flagged a significant number of non-Windows users.
The affected players primarily used compatibility layers like those for macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck to run the game. On January 3rd, a community manager acknowledged the error on the official Discord server, stating that compatibility layer usage had been wrongly identified as cheating. NetEase has since reversed the bans and apologized for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report actual cheating behavior and offered an appeal process for those wrongly banned. The incident highlights the challenges of anti-cheat systems, particularly with compatibility layers like Proton on SteamOS, known for triggering false positives.
Separately, a significant portion of the Marvel Rivals community is calling for the expansion of the in-game character ban system. Currently, this feature, allowing players to remove specific characters from selection, is only available at Diamond rank and above. Players on the game's subreddit express frustration, arguing that the lack of character bans at lower ranks creates unbalanced gameplay and limits strategic diversity. One player highlighted the difficulty of competing against opponents with significantly advantageous character choices. Many high-ranking players support the change, emphasizing that broader implementation would improve the game's balance, introduce newer players to the mechanic, and foster more varied team compositions beyond simple DPS strategies. "Bans are soft balancing that makes the game tolerable," one user commented. NetEase has yet to publicly respond to this feedback.
