Nintendo warns retailers of Switch 2 shortages

Nintendo reportedly started distributing 'Out of Stock' signs for Switch 2 to retailers before the console even hits shelves.

The highly anticipated Switch 2 launches this Thursday, June 5, and Nintendo expects demand will quickly surpass available inventory.

Reddit posts (via VGC) show official Switch 2 stock notices appearing in U.S. stores alongside promotional displays for the console and launch title Mario Kart World. "These came straight from Nintendo," shared a retail employee preparing for a midnight launch event. "They've got a sense of humor."

Nintendo Preparing for Shortages

Nintendo previously warned about limited Switch 2 availability, with particularly tight stock in Japan facing massive demand. For U.S. markets, the company prioritized consoles manufactured in Vietnam to avoid potential Chinese tariff issues.

This isn't surprising - most successful consoles face stock constraints at launch. Switch 2 pre-orders have already caused frenzy among eager fans, making sellouts practically guaranteed.

These "Out of Stock" signs serve a practical purpose, preparing store employees for the inevitable stream of customers asking about console availability.

"Retail workers know they'll face countless customers demanding they 'check the back' like there's some magical stash of consoles hidden away," commented one Reddit user.

Marketing Psychology at Play

Out-of-stock notices can actually boost demand by creating perception of scarcity and exclusivity.

"This is clever marketing that makes people want it more," observed one fan. "Showing limited availability makes customers feel they need to act fast."

Preparing for Switch 2's debut, Nintendo recently updated both the original Switch hardware and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The company also previewed enhanced versions of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on the new console.

For those fortunate enough to secure a Switch 2 this week, Nintendo shared crucial advice about not removing the console's protective screen film.
