The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge

The Burning Monolith, a unique map location in Path of Exile 2's Atlas of Worlds, resembles a Realmgate but presents a significantly more challenging experience. Accessing it requires three rare items: Crisis Fragments, each obtainable only by conquering a Citadel – an extremely elusive map node.

Unlocking the Arbiter of Ash

The Burning Monolith is the lair of the Arbiter of Ash, the game's toughest pinnacle boss. Your first attempt to activate the Monolith's door triggers "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, comprising three sub-quests: Ezomyte Infiltration (Iron Citadel), Faridun Foray (Copper Citadel), and Vaal Incursion (Stone Citadel). Completing these Citadels yields the three necessary Crisis Fragments. Combine them at the Monolith's altar to initiate the Arbiter of Ash encounter. Ensure your character build is optimized; the Arbiter of Ash boasts immense health and devastating attacks.

The Citadel Hunt

Path of Exile 2 features three Citadels – Iron, Copper, and Stone – each guarded by a challenging boss who drops a corresponding Crisis Fragment. The primary difficulty lies in their unpredictable location.

Citadels are one-time attempts. The Atlas is procedurally generated, making Citadel locations unique to each player. While no guaranteed strategy exists, community observations suggest:

  1. Directional Search: Choose a direction on the Atlas and explore systematically until you discover a Citadel. Utilizing Towers for a broader view is helpful.
  2. Corruption Focus: Look for corrupted nodes at the Atlas's edges. Prioritize these, clear them successfully, unlock nearby Towers, and repeat. Combine this with the directional approach.
  3. Clustered Appearance: Citadels may appear in groups. Finding one increases the likelihood of discovering the others nearby.

Citadel hunting demands a strong build and is best tackled late in the endgame.

Alternatively, Crisis Fragments can be purchased online or through the in-game Currency Exchange, though their rarity makes them expensive. This option might be preferable to the arduous Citadel hunt.
