Assassin's Creed Shadows (AC Shadows) reveals its detailed progression mechanics, including a robust weapon transmog system that separates aesthetics from functionality. The development team shared these insights on the game's official website on March 1, 2025, with Associate Game Director Julien explaining their design philosophy.

The transmog feature allows players to retain weapon stats while changing their appearance. To access this system, players must first establish a Forge in their Hideout. Once unlocked, customization becomes available directly through the inventory interface.

Julien explained: "The Forge serves as your central hub for equipment management. Beyond transmog, you'll upgrade and dismantle gear - we'll detail the Hideout's full functionality in a future update." Players can combine elements from different weapons, potentially creating hybrids with one weapon's blade, another's guard, and a third's handle.

Revamped Progression Mechanics

Following Creative Director Charles Benoit's combat showcase at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Ubisoft now reveals deeper progression systems. Julien discussed adapting these mechanics for dual protagonists: "Implementing two distinct character archetypes in feudal Japan required us to reimagine our progression approach while preserving martial arts authenticity."

Specialized Skill Development

AC Shadows features unique Mastery trees for protagonists Naoe (shinobi) and Yasuke (samurai). Julien elaborated: "These trees encourage specialization in particular weapons or playstyles. Mastery points unlock both new abilities and passive bonuses, creating meaningful progression."

Advancing Knowledge Ranks through peaceful activities - like temple exploration, shrine prayers, meditation practices, or martial drills - gates certain abilities. This system rewards diverse gameplay approaches beyond combat.

Tailored Combat Experiences

The game's perk system enables sophisticated playstyle customization. Equipment modifications can amplify statistics, introduce status effects, or create unique combat conditions, encouraging varied tactical approaches.
