NieR: Automata allows extensive free-roaming and side-quest completion between main story missions. Much content might seem missable on a first playthrough. Completing the main game narrative is only the beginning; access to earlier side quests within the same save file unlocks after the true ending. Here's how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select.

Unlocking Chapter Select requires completing one of the game's true endings. This involves finishing all three playthroughs and selecting a specific ending during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider each a distinct chapter within the overarching narrative.
After viewing the credits of a playthrough, save the game. Loading that save initiates the next section, featuring a new playable character. The final playthrough involves multiple character switches; its completion unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.
Access Chapter Select from two locations:
This menu allows selection of any game chapter to load during its corresponding story segment. All profile aspects, including weapons, level, and items, carry over. When loading a chapter with multiple playable characters, you can choose your character.
Completed side quests are permanently completed and cannot be replayed, regardless of the selected chapter. Save at an access point before transitioning between chapters; otherwise, progress (levels and items) from the current chapter is lost. Chapter Select facilitates completion of all content and allows revisiting choices to obtain all possible endings.
