Apex Legends Reboot Announced

EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and Plans for a 2.0 Reboot

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. While the game boasts over 200 million players, its revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this during a recent financial call, stating that Apex Legends' net bookings have fallen year-on-year, although aligning with projected figures.

Wilson highlighted the game's continued community support, focusing on three key areas: maintaining a positive player experience through quality-of-life improvements and anti-cheat measures; creating new content; and exploring further content development to boost engagement. He admitted that progress in these areas has been slower than desired.

To address the financial shortfall, EA is developing "Apex Legends 2.0," a significant update aimed at revitalizing the franchise, attracting new players, and, importantly, increasing profitability. However, the launch is strategically planned for after the release of the next Battlefield title (anticipated before April 2026), likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning it as a franchise with a lifespan of decades. He described Apex 2.0 not as a final iteration but as a major overhaul to enhance the overall gaming experience. This strategy mirrors Activision's approach with Warzone 2.0, though the success of that reboot remains debatable among fans.

Despite its current financial struggles, Apex Legends maintains a strong presence on Steam's concurrent player count charts, though its peak player numbers are behind it, and it's currently experiencing a downward trend. EA will undoubtedly be studying the successes and failures of its battle royale competitors as it navigates the future of Apex Legends.
