Marvel Rivals Update Disables Season 1 Mods

Summary

  • Marvel Rivals' Season 1 update appears to have disabled custom mod functionality.
  • NetEase has reinforced that mod usage violates the game's Terms of Service.
  • The mod restrictions likely serve to protect the game's monetization through official cosmetics.

The recent Marvel Rivals update has reportedly removed support for third-party mods. While players previously enjoyed creating custom character skins, Season 1's implementation seems to have blocked these modifications.

Following its successful December 2024 launch, Marvel Rivals introduced Season 1 content on January 10, 2025. The update features The Fantastic Four as playable characters, with Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman immediately available, while Thing and Human Torch will debut in late February. Additional content includes a new Battle Pass, environments, and the Doom Match game mode.

Beyond announced features, players discovered their installed Marvel Rivals mods stopped functioning. NetEase had previously warned that mods - even purely cosmetic ones - violate the game's Terms of Service and could lead to account bans. The Season 1 update appears to have implemented hash checking technology to automatically prevent mod usage.

Marvel Rivals Implements Mod Restrictions

NetEase's crackdown shouldn't surprise the community. Beyond their established policies, the developer had already removed specific mods like a controversial Captain America reskin featuring U.S. political figures. Many players have expressed disappointment about losing customization options, with some mod creators sharing their now-unusable designs online.

While some inappropriate mods (including risqué character skins) drew complaints, business considerations likely drove this decision. As a free-to-play title, Marvel Rivals depends on cosmetic microtransactions for revenue. Custom mods could undermine this business model by providing alternative cosmetics without payment.
