Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the game to a live service model. While no decisions have been finalized, Mizobe outlined the considerations involved.
Live Service: A Profitable but Challenging Path
Mizobe confirmed continued updates, including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses. However, he presented two potential future paths: completing Palworld as a buy-to-play (B2P) title or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps). He acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, extending the game's lifespan and revenue streams. However, he emphasized the significant challenges, noting Palworld's initial design wasn't geared towards this model.
A crucial factor is player preference. Mizobe highlighted the typical live service model's reliance on a free-to-play (F2P) foundation, with monetization through paid content like skins and battle passes. Palworld's B2P structure complicates this transition, requiring careful consideration of the potential impact on the player base. He cited successful F2P transitions of games like PUBG and Fall Guys, but emphasized the years it took for those games to successfully adapt.
Alternative Monetization Strategies and Player Feedback
Mizobe also discussed alternative monetization strategies, including ad monetization. However, he dismissed this option for the PC version due to the negative player reaction often associated with in-game ads on platforms like Steam. He stated that even if effective, PC gamers generally express strong aversion to ads.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and retention while carefully evaluating the best long-term direction for Palworld. The game remains in early access, recently receiving the significant Sakurajima update and introducing PvP arena combat.
The future of Palworld remains uncertain, with Pocketpair carefully weighing the potential benefits and challenges of each path. The decision will ultimately depend on a careful assessment of both business viability and player sentiment.
