Sony's PS6 Future Hangs in the Balance as Disc Debate Rages

Feb 12,2025 Author: Audrey

Former Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios CEO, Shawn Layden, believes Sony cannot afford to release a completely digital, disc-less PlayStation 6. While acknowledging Xbox's success with this strategy, Layden emphasizes Sony's significantly larger global market share. Eliminating physical games would alienate a substantial portion of their user base.

Layden highlighted that Xbox's digital-first approach thrives primarily in English-speaking countries, unlike Sony's widespread global dominance. He questioned Sony's ability to ensure reliable internet access for all players, citing concerns about connectivity in less developed regions. He used examples like rural Italy and the needs of traveling athletes or military personnel who rely on offline play. Layden suggested Sony is likely assessing the potential market loss but that the scale of this loss would be considerable given their massive global reach.

The debate regarding disc-less consoles has been ongoing since the PlayStation 4 era, intensified by Xbox's release of digital-only consoles. Both PlayStation and Xbox offer digital-only versions of their current consoles, but Sony has yet to fully commit to a disc-less model. This is partly due to the availability of external disc drives for their digital-only PS5 consoles.

However, the increasing popularity of subscription services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus's Games Catalog, coupled with declining physical media sales, raises questions about the future of disc-based games. Many new releases, even those on disc, require online installation or activation, effectively rendering physical media less essential. This trend, exemplified by games like Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows and EA's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, further blurs the lines between physical and digital distribution. The practice of including what was once a second installation disc as downloadable content underscores this shift.

Would you buy a PlayStation 6 if it had no disc drive?
